While the manager's role and the purpose of coaching are directly related to employee goal achievement, they do not make up the whole story. It is important that in the process, you also draw out the employee's potential as a person. In this way, you can help them to maximize their own resources.

A person's knowledge, skills, experiences, networks and tools are all resources. The ability to quickly acquire new skills, access all of these skills and then put them to work are also all resources. You could say that the person's very self is a resource. By developing the ability to access and express one's own resources, a person becomes more capable. People can better fulfill their roles in a variety of areas and increase their capabilities, performing better and faster in their jobs and projects.

However, humans are often not aware of the resources that they have. For example, in the case of short track sprinters, muscles, nerves, from, mental fortitude, the ability to control their bodies, and the will to run are all resources. Even if you are aware of all of your resources, it is possible that you will not know how to use them in a new situation.

Thus, another theme for the Three-Minute Coach is maximizing resources. This includes aspects such as taking stock of these resources, discovering strengths, thinking about what combinations of team members will be effective based on their resources and choosing an environment where these resources can be best used or expressed.

It is the same at the office. When individuals use their skills and knowledge effectively and contribute to the organization, they are considered 'capable. In contract, if someone's abilities are polished but there is no 'situation' for them to display and express these abilities, that person will not be known as 'talented' or 'capable.'

What, then, are these 'situations'?

They arise from all of the relationships that people have. Let me explain this in more detail. If you want to make the best of your own resources, you need a way to access them as well as a 'situation' in which you can express them. Resources are drawn out through 'relationships' and can be expressed in those 'relationships. Without the ability to build and maintain relationships, it is impossible to access and express your talents.
