During presentations and training sessions, I often ask, “Are you satisfied with the state of communication within your company?” Each time, less than ten percent of listeners raise their hands. I also ask, “ Are you taking time to listen to your employees?” Again, at most ten percent of the audience raise their hands. It would seem that in most cases, people are often dissatisfied with the state of communications within the companies.

If this is the case, why do companies continue to neglect it? Is top management really unaware of how important a factor communication is to improving an organization’s overall performance? Here are some examples of what is often said about the relationship between communication and the organization.

  • Communication is an individual issue. It is not the company’s problem.
  • There are almost no problems with communication at our company.
  • There is no direct correlation between communication and productivity.
  • Communication slows down an organization.
  • Communication sometimes confuses an organization and is sometimes a waste of time and energy.
  • Communication is no more than a substance like air.
  • Regulations, forecasts, efficient use of resources, productivity, performance, motivation, real earnings, return on investment, plans, roles, experience, skills and leadership are all higher priorities than communication.

Communication is directly related to productivity. It is also related to every activity within an organizations. Without communication, businesses do not run smoothly and employees do not grow. This is a simple fact. No one can deny it. Everyone knows this and all people all say that communication is important.

However, in reality, very few of these people will examine their own communication and their company’s communication and try to make improvements.
